BEST Way to Store Fresh Basil Indoors
It has only taken me a couple decades to learn this little trick. After watching fresh basil plant after basil plant wilt, dry up, turn black, etc in my presence, I was pretty much throwing my hands up in the air in exasperation. I could not for the life of me get basil plants to thrive indoors. I have tried potting them to no avail – they always die within a couple of weeks. I usually do pretty well growing them outside in the summer months. But bringing that basil inside has been an epic failure until about, oh, 8 weeks ago. Do you see the fresh basil plant pictured above? Bob bought that basil plant right after Christmas when we found ourselves super missing all of the caprese salads we enjoy in the summer. On a whim, we ended up discovering the absolute BEST way to store fresh basil indoors!
The best part? It’s pretty much as simple as it gets.
Take a fresh basil plant. Remove it from its pot or plastic wrap and shake off as much of the dirt as you can, taking care not to damage the roots.
Stick that plant in a mason jar and add water until the roots are completely submerged.
Try it! It really works! When the water level gets low, simply fill the jar back up again. We are going on the third month of enjoying this basil plant which has continued to thrive and grow. We keep the jar on a windowsill in the kitchen, letting it get plenty of sunlight. The jar sits in plain sight, which had lead to lots of fresh basil in my cooking lately! Yum!
Have you discovered another easy way to keep basil fresh indoors? I would love to hear it!
