Camping Trail Mix Snack

If you follow me on social media, you saw that we got out into the great outdoors over the weekend! We kicked off a brand new camping season with a stay in the Poconos.  We had campfire time, nature exploration time, but best of all, just some kick-back-and-relax time.  We like to shop for meal and snack food a few days before leaving on a camping trip, so last week Landon, Grandma and I headed to Walmart.  We picked up some Post Honey Bunches of Oats Honey Crunch O’s for a snack idea I wanted to try.  There were several flavors to choose from, but I love the sweetness of honey! We also got a bag of Berry Colossal Crunch from Malt-O-Meal.  (Landon attempted to toss a box of the new Kung Fu Panda Po Power Crunch into the cart, but I promised him we would pick that up on another trip to Walmart!)

On Friday, Landon and I made up a fresh batch of “Camping Trail Mix” for some campfire-friendly snacking!  The kids are crazy about Post Honey Bunches of Oats Honey Crunch O’s (and I have to admit, Bob and I love it too).  I grabbed my box of cereal and also added pretzel sticks, mini marshmallows and milk chocolate morsels.

Post Honey Bunches of Oats

I love this snack because it tastes great any time of day and is so easy to make.  The kids love to help me make trail mix!  There’s no real measuring involved with this one – it’s about as simple as it can get.  I try to throw in equal parts of cereal, pretzels and marshmallows, and then a handful of chocolate chips.  If you’re a recipe-follower, here are some actual measurements to help with proportions!

To make this super easy recipe, you will need:

  • 4 Cups Post Honey Bunches of Oats Honey Crunch O’s
  • 2 Cups pretzel sticks
  • 1 Cup mini marshmallows
  • 1/2 Cup milk chocolate morsels

To make:

  • Combine all ingredients in a bowl or container.
  • Store your trail mix in an airtight container or bag.

We like to serve this trail mix in small cups or cupcake liners.  I have a set of silicone cupcake liners that hold up great for snacking.

I had some very happy little campers on my hands!  They were both only too happy to sit for a spell and enjoy the campfire with their trail mix.  I thought for sure that Landon would pick the chocolate and marshmallows out of his cup and ditch the rest, but nope, he enjoyed all of it!  Lily was thrilled that she had helped to prepare the snack and could “serve” it herself.
