If you are looking for a family-friendly resort that offers scenic views as well as a whole list of seasonal outdoor activities, consider a stay at Lake Morey Resort in Fairlee, VT. The resort sits on the shores of Lake Morey, a 600-acre lake nestled between the mountains. We (myself, my husband and our 2 kids, ages 2 and 7) spent a January weekend at Lake Morey Resort.

The Room
We sprawled out in a spacious “Terrace” room that offered 2 queen-sized beds and a pull-out sofa bed. There was a sitting area with two chairs, a desk and an armoire that held the TV and also offered several drawers to hold clothing. The room had a coffee maker, a couple of padded benches and plenty of floor space for our toddler to play with his collection of cars brought from home.

Our room had a breathtaking view of a very frozen Lake Morey. Absolutely gorgeous. We had a great time watching the skating and hockey action on the lake, all from our cozy warm room.

The bathroom was quite large and had two sinks and some complimentary toiletries. We had housekeeping make up the room on our 2nd day there and the attendant did a nice job sprucing up our room. She restocked our toiletries and even very sweetly made up the toddler’s portable bed, tucking his trucks into his blankie. Such a nice little touch that made us all smile.

THE FOOD
Food is served at breakfast (buffet style) and dinner (order from a set menu). For lunch you can find food at the Country Club across the street. Food is not included with your stay, but you can add a meal option upon check-in or simply pay per meal.

We ate breakfast both mornings (buffet style, good selection) and dinner (sit down, order from menu) both evenings. We were VERY impressed with the dinner. We are fairly picky when it comes to food taste and quality and let me tell you – our meals both nights were exceptional. The kids ordered off of a kid menu and loved the pizza and grilled cheese. I had the Vermont burger the first night and the salmon the next night. My husband had the steak the first night and the Vermont burger the next night. The food arrived hot, nicely plated and was very delicious.

WINTER ACTIVITIES
We thought that one of the best “perks” of staying at this resort (in addition to the huge frozen lake) was the fact that guests of the resort can enjoy FREE skate, cross country ski and sled rentals. You simply head over to the Skate Shop and rent whatever you’d like at no charge. They did have some really neat looking new Scooter/Sled combos called Kick Sparks that were available for a rental charge. I’m guessing the charge is necessary due to the popularity of the item. We saw quite a few families having fun with them on the lake during our stay.

Some popular winter activities at Lake Morey Resort include ice skating on the lake’s 4.5 mile skate trail, playing a game of ice hockey one of the cleared “rink” areas, sledding and ice fishing. (Note: you need a Vermont fishing license to go ice fishing. Licenses can be purchased from a store in town.)

STAFF
Everyone who we encountered during our stay was polite and cheerful. All of our waitstaff, the front desk, the employee at the Skate Shack… everyone was upbeat and friendly. They were nice to our kids and made us feel very welcome.

LOCATION
There are so many activities that will keep your family busy at Lake Morey Resort, but if you do find some time to explore the area, there are some neat attractions a short drive away. We spent an afternoon in the town of Hanover, NH (a 20 minute drive from Lake Morey). This is the town where Dartmouth College is located. We ate a great lunch at a pub in town and then headed back across the river into Vermont. Located next to the river is the Montshire Museum of Science for kids. We enjoyed a couple of hours there and then headed back to Lake Morey.

FINAL THOUGHTS
Well, the kids are already asking when we are coming back… so I can tell you without hesitation that they had an excellent time. My husband and I also had an excellent weekend. We loved the secluded feeling at the resort, that we were at a private lake getaway. We could not get enough of the view! Every chance we had to just sit and take it all in, we did. We would recommend a stay at Lake Morey Resort to families who love the outdoors and love the simplicity that a full-service resort has to offer.

  1. I would suggest a summer stay there as well! My family travels from ohio every two years to visit Lake Morey. All of the children love it! Last year they were disappointed that we went to Disney instead of Lake Morey!
